Japan lifts tsunami advisory issued after an earthquake hit near its outlying islands

Japan issued a tsunami advisory Thursday after a powerful earthquake struck close to its outlying islands within the Pacific Ocean, however lifted it about two hours later. No harm was reported.

The advisory, the second-lowest of a four-stage warning system, requested individuals on islands within the Izu chain, which stretches south from the Tokyo area, to steer clear of the coast and river mouths.

The US Geological Survey stated a sequence of offshore earthquakes hit the realm on Thursday morning. The strongest measured magnitude 6.1 and was situated at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), it stated.

The quake was not felt on the islands or within the Tokyo area, however the Japan Meteorological Company warned {that a} tsunami as excessive as 1 meter (3.2 toes) might hit the coasts of the islands. A small tsunami measuring about 30 centimeters (1 foot) was noticed at Yaene on Hachijo island, the company stated.

No harm was reported and the company lifted the tsunami advisory about two hours later.

Japan is among the most earthquake susceptible locations on Earth. An enormous magnitude 9.0 quake in 2011 triggered a tsunami that destroyed swaths of northern Japan and prompted three reactors to soften on the Fukushima nuclear plant.
