WhatsApp is dropping support for these ‘very old’ iPhones

NEW DELHI: Facebook-owned WhatsApp is reportedly set to drop support for iPhones running on Apple iOS 10 and iOS 11. According to a report in WABeta Info, the company is now warning iPhone users running iOS 10 or iOS 11 that they need to update their iPhones in order to keep using WhatsApp after October 24. The report also shares an image of one such notification.
However, most iPhone users will likely not be affected as iOS 10 and iOS 11 runs on two very old Apple devices — iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c. The advisory means that users of these iPhones will not be able to use WhatsApp after October 24.
Other old phones that WhatsApp supports
Users who have an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6s running iOS 12 need not worry for now, as the company will keep supporting them. WhatsApp has also updated its FAQ page with these guidelines. “We support iOS 12 or newer, but we recommend using the latest version available,” says the company.
Tips for best experience using WhatsApp on Apple iOS
* Use the latest iOS version: WhatsApp recommends users to use the latest version of iOS available for their phones.
* No support for jailbroken or unlocked devices: WhatsApp explicitly restrict the use of jailbroken or unlocked devices. The company says that because these modifications may affect the functionality of user’s device, it can’t provide support for devices using modified versions of the iPhone’s operating system.
* Phone must have SMS or call capability: To properly set up a new WhatsApp account, users phone must be able to receive SMS or calls during the verification process. WhatsApp does not support setting up new accounts on WiFi-only devices.
