NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha arrested under UAPA

NewsClick founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha was arrested by the Delhi police on Tuesday below the Illegal Actions (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Together with Purkayastha, Amit Chakravarty, the HR head of the information portal, has additionally been arrested.

An announcement by the Delhi Police, as reported by ANI, mentioned, “Regarding the search, seizure and detentions carried out today in connection with a UAPA case registered with Special Cell, so far, two accused, Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty have been arrested. A total of 37 male suspects have been questioned at premises, 9 female suspects have been questioned at their respective places of stay and digital devices, documents etc. have been seized/collected for examination.”

The Editor-in-Chief of NewsClick, Prabir Purkayastha and writers Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and Urmilesh have been dropped at the particular cell workplaces within the nationwide capital on Tuesday as a part of the investigation as Delhi Police launched a crackdown towards NewsClick and its journalists earlier this morning in reference to an FIR registered below the Illegal Actions (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Flagging issues over the incident, the Editors Guild of India, in an announcement, mentioned it was “deeply concerned” concerning the raids on the residences of senior journalists early this morning.

Earlier, on August 10, a report within the New York Instances had alleged that NewsClick was a part of a worldwide community that receives funding from American billionaire Neville Roy Singham.

Singham is called a socialist benefactor of far-left causes and is on the centre of a lavishly funded affect marketing campaign that defends China and pushes its propaganda.

Singham can also be mentioned to have shut ties with the Chinese language authorities’s media machine.
